ADVOCATE - EDUCATOR - THERAPIST
COURTNEY FURLONG
A child of the 80’s and 90’s, Courtney grew up in the American south receiving a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services from Auburn University. Leaving the comforts of home, Courtney spent her 20’s across the world working with survivors of commercial sexual exploitation in Bangkok, Thailand. Courtney returned to the her home, Atlanta, GA, and continued working with victims of commercial sexual exploitation. Today, Courtney is working on a PhD in Human Development and Family Science with the hopes of strengthening the global response to sex trafficking and exploitation.
Since 2005, Courtney has had the privilege of working with tens of thousands of survivors from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, India, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Uganda, Kenya, Liberia, and the United States. She has served American exotic dancers in their sixties and stateless children in Thailand as young as three years old. Courtney loves this population and considers them friends. She feels honored to witness their resiliency every day. As much as she loves directly working with survivors, she came to the conclusion that she cannot address these complex and multifaceted issues alone. For this reason, she has trained and managed thousands of staff, interns, and volunteers. Eventually, she decided to turn her attention toward practitioners. Through these efforts, she discovered that there are a number of good-hearted individuals who are trying to serve survivors of sexual exploitation, but they are under-resourced and desperate for evidenced-based research to inform practice and policy.
In Atlanta, they formed an alliance of direct-service organizations and embarked on a task of establishing a list of best (or at least promising) practices. She then joined the global leadership team for the International Christian Alliance on Prostitution (ICAP), where she represents and supports grassroots, direct-service practitioners in North America. Most recently, Courtney joined the board of Atlanta Redemption Ink, a nonprofit who provides tattoo coverups for victims of commercial sexual exploitation who have brands/trafficking-related tattoos, track marks, self-harm scars, and other scarring.
Utilizing her existing networks, Courtney plans to establish vehicles to connect practitioners to the most current, relevant research available, support public policy, and train practitioners.
